Housing Resources Board is Bainbridge Island's Affordable Housing Provider

Our Programs

Independent Living

The Independent Living program provides home modifications for the elderly and disabled on Bainbridge, so that they may remain in their homes safely.  Using funds from the City of Bainbridge Island’s Housing Trust Fund, private foundations, churchs and individuals, HRB is able to hire contractors to make necessary alterations/improvements to inaccessible or unsafe homes.  HRB also strives to educate the community to better meet the needs of this population.

Call Independent Living Director Julie Stone at (206) 842-1909, ext. 2# or email here at julie@housingresourcesboard.org for more information on this program.

Below are examples of Independent Living modifications in 2009 that made it possible for folks to continue to reside at home.  Community partners such as Helpline, BISC, and private donors also contributed to the following efforts:

  • Water service was restored for an unemployed disabled resident dependent on SSI while attending a local education program.  Successful trouble shooting and restoration of broken lines enabled the client to remain in familiar surroundings at home and to continue with school.
  •  A home assessment resulted in installation of grab bars in an elderly client’s home for fall prevention.
  • Safety modifications for an independent senior with chronic conditions replaced deteriorating bathroom fixtures with accessible units suitable for her needs.  Modifications included entry stair railing, smoke detectors, and ongoing community effort to clear clutter for fall prevention.
  • A senior couple, both rehabilitating, received installation of an accessible shower in the main floor bathroom of their residence.  Work is about to begin which will allow them both to remain in their residence while meeting safety recommendations.
